Finnish Christmas Stars

If you want to add some sugary magic to your Christmas this year then have a go at making these quick and easy traditional Finnish treats!

Our founder Miia hails from Finland, the country of Christmas, so wanted to share some of her childhood with all you curiosity seekers…

Named Joulutorttu, these star-shaped delights are originally made with a buttery puff pastry and sweet prune jam however we’ve used a simple raspberry jam to show you how easy it is to make with ingredients you most likely have lying around.

We also used store bought puff-pastry however if you want a challenge then you can always make your own!

Cooking time ~ 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • puff-pastry sheets (store bought or homemade)

  • jam (prune traditionally or just use your favourite!)

  • one egg (for egg wash)

  • splash of milk (for egg wash)

  • icing sugar (for dusting)

Method:

Start by preheating your oven to 200 degrees Celsius and then get your puff pastry sheet and cut into roughly 3 inch squares as shown in the picture.

Once cut, add a teaspoon of your jam of choice onto the centre of the square and then starting from each corner cut a diagonal line towards the jam without meeting in the middle.

Then fold one side of each corner into the middle and repeat until you have made a star! Make sure to reference the picture when completing this.

Now that you have your Christmas stars, mix the egg with a splash of milk and lightly brush that over the pastry.

Once you’ve completed that, place on a sheet of baking paper and put in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Finally, wait for the treats to cool down then lightly dust with icing sugar and there you have it!

We hope you enjoy these as much as we did over at Curious HQ!

Why not experiment with the filling and try making a savoury version? You could use a soft cheese or a nice pesto!
